NE-YO and Akon Bring the Heat to Charlotte on the “Nights Like This Tour”

CHARLOTTE, N.C.   Sunday night at Truliant Amphitheater was more than just a concert it was a celebration of two decades of R&B and hip-hop hits as NE-YO and Akon shared the stage on their co-headlining “Nights Like This Tour.” Even a late-evening rain shower couldn’t cool off one of the hottest shows of the summer.

The evening belonged first to NE-YO, who immediately reminded fans why he remains one of R&B’s smoothest performers. Opening with “Closer,” followed by “Because of You” and “Stay,” he had the crowd singing every word before continuing through several more fan favorites.

Dressed entirely in black, NE-YO wore a stylish black vest trimmed with gold stripes that instantly brought to mind the iconic stage fashion of Michael Jackson. The look fit perfectly with the evening’s polished choreography. Behind him, dancers dressed in sleek black tuxedo-style bodysuits delivered sharp, synchronized routines that elevated every performance.

One of the night’s most unforgettable moments came during “Sexy Love.” As the music slowed, two poles descended from the ceiling on opposite sides of the stage. Two incredibly talented dancers, dressed in striking red, emerged and performed breathtaking aerial pole routines, swinging high above the stage with incredible athleticism. Later in the show, NE-YO joined the performance himself, grabbing one of the dancers as she wrapped herself around him while they swung together through the air. It was a daring, theatrical moment that left the audience cheering.

NE-YO wasn’t finished surprising fans. After changing into blue jeans, a T-shirt, and a cowboy hat, he climbed off the stage and walked through the crowd, singing directly to fans, dancing with them, and turning the amphitheater into one giant party. At another point, several lucky audience members were invited onstage to dance alongside him, creating memories they’ll never forget.

Then it was Akon’s turn to take command of the evening.

Emerging in an all-white outfit accented by a sparkling silver diamond chain, Akon looked every bit the superstar. His entrance drew thunderous applause as he launched into “Beautiful Day,” followed by the crowd favorite “Smack That” and then “I’m So Paid.” His unmistakable voice sounded as strong as ever, proving he hasn’t lost a step.

Akon’s dancers perfectly complemented the performance. His male dancers were dressed entirely in white, matching his clean, elegant look, while the female dancers wore black lace outfits that created a striking visual contrast under the stage lights. Combined with crisp choreography and nonstop energy, every song felt like a celebration.

Throughout the night, the production itself was spectacular. Fire effects erupted across the stage, sparklers shot into the air, and confetti cannons exploded at just the right moments, giving the performance arena-sized production values while maintaining an intimate connection with the audience.

The grand finale brought both superstars together on stage. NE-YO and Akon traded verses, harmonized effortlessly, and surprised fans with covers of two Beyoncé songs and a Lady Gaga hit. The chemistry between the two longtime hitmakers was undeniable, and by then nearly everyone inside Truliant Amphitheater was on their feet singing along.

As the evening progressed, rain began to fall across the venue. Instead of sending fans for cover, it only added to the atmosphere. Thousands continued dancing, singing, and embracing the moment, creating one of those unforgettable concert experiences where the weather simply became part of the show.

The vibes were high, but the nostalgia was even higher. Every song transported fans back to the soundtrack of the 2000s while reminding everyone just how timeless these artists’ catalogs remain.

I’ve attended many concerts over the years, but this one easily ranks among my favorites. Between the incredible performances, flawless choreography, stunning production, audience interaction, and two legendary artists sharing one stage, NE-YO and Akon delivered a night Charlotte won’t soon forget.

Some shows entertain. Others become memories. The “Nights Like This Tour” accomplished both.
