Iron Maiden Battles the Rain and Brings Heavy Metal History to Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Iron Maiden’s Run For Your Lives World Tour rolled into Charlotte for a night that fans will not forget and not just because the legendary British metal band was celebrating 50 years of heavy metal. Mother Nature decided to join the show, bringing what could only be described as monsoon-like rain to Truliant Amphitheater.
But the weather wasn’t going to stop Iron Maiden’s faithful.
As the rain poured down, fans packed onto the lawn were completely soaked. Ponchos and rain jackets could only do so much as the heavy rain continued to fall. Yet instead of heading for cover, many fans stayed right where they were, singing, headbanging and rocking out through the downpour.
That dedication seemed like the perfect introduction to an Iron Maiden show.
With Megadeth opening the night, the crowd was already fired up before the headliners took the stage. But when the lights finally went down and Iron Maiden’s music began filling the amphitheater, the energy level went through the roof.
Then came Bruce Dickinson.
Dickinson stepped onto the stage wearing a black shirt, leather jacket, blue jeans and black boots, with his long hair pulled back into a bun. At 68 years old, the legendary frontman showed no signs of slowing down as he immediately took command of the stage.
The Run For Your Lives World Tour is a celebration of Iron Maiden’s 50-year history, and the setlist reflected that mission. Rather than concentrating on the band’s newer material, the show traveled back through some of the albums and songs that established Maiden as one of heavy metal’s biggest bands.
The night opened with “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” followed by “Wrathchild,” “Killers” and “Phantom of the Opera.” The crowd responded loudly to every song, with longtime fans singing along while younger members of the audience experienced these classics live.
As the night continued, Iron Maiden unleashed “The Number of the Beast,” “Infinite Dreams,” “Powerslave,” “2 Minutes to Midnight” and “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”
The band’s massive production made the rain almost seem like part of the show. Giant stage visuals, lighting effects and the appearance of the band’s iconic mascot, Eddie, transformed the stage into the kind of theatrical spectacle that fans have come to expect from Iron Maiden.
And through it all, Dickinson kept moving.
He ran across the stage, interacted with the audience and delivered the songs with the unmistakable voice that has defined Iron Maiden for decades. The rain may have soaked the lawn crowd, but it certainly didn’t dampen their enthusiasm.
The audience erupted when the band launched into “Run to the Hills,” “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son,” “The Trooper” and “Hallowed Be Thy Name.”
One of the most impressive things about watching Iron Maiden live is seeing how much energy the band continues to bring to the stage after five decades. Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers delivered the heavy guitar riffs and driving bass lines that have become the band’s trademark.
The band returned for an encore featuring “Aces High,” as Bruce Dicksnson dressed the part putting on the piolet hat and goggles. “Fear of the Dark” and “Wasted Years.”
By the end of the night, the people standing on the lawn may have been drenched from head to toe, but they had also witnessed something special. They had endured the heavy rain to see one of heavy metal’s greatest bands and they never stopped rocking.

And on this particular Charlotte night, the fans proved that not even a torrential downpour could keep them away.
They came for Iron Maiden. They got soaked for Iron Maiden. And they rocked out for Iron Maiden.
