Concert Review: Goo Goo Dolls Light Up Charlotte with Nostalgia and Heart

The Goo Goo Dolls rolled into Charlotte on a warm Friday night as part of their Summer Anthem Tour, and from the moment they took the stage at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre, it was clear the crowd was in for more than just a trip down memory lane they were getting a masterclass in heartfelt rock and roll.
Co-headlining with Dashboard Confessional, the night started with a healthy dose of early 2000s emo energy. Dashboard warmed up the stage with a powerful and emotional set, sending fans right back to their high school bedrooms. But once the lights dimmed again and Johnny Rzeznik walked out with that unmistakable guitar slung across his shoulder, the energy shifted. The Goo Goo Dolls weren’t here to just reminisce—they came to deliver.
Opening with “Naked” and launching straight into “Slide,” the band wasted no time pulling fans into a setlist packed with both old favorites and newer gems. Songs like “Here Is Gone,” “Black Balloon,” and “Big Machine” had fans singing in unison, while deeper cuts like “January Friend” and “Sympathy” proved the band hasn’t lost touch with their roots.
Of course, the night reached a collective emotional peak when “Name” echoed through the amphitheatre, prompting thousands of phone lights to sway like fireflies. And just when it seemed the night couldn’t get more magical, the unmistakable first chords of “Iris” rang out, drawing a roaring reaction that could’ve rivaled any stadium crowd. Even after decades, that song still hits with the same intensity and beauty it did the day it was released.
Rzeznik’s vocals were strong and sincere, and Robby Takac brought his usual punky edge to the set, giving the performance a balanced dynamic. The band sounded tight, with clean instrumentation and just enough rawness to feel authentic. The production was polished but never overbearing—letting the music speak for itself
